Who ends up at 3 ounces

Three ounces is a substantial invitation. It is where pocket folds, double envelopes, letterpress on double-thick stock and suites with four or five inserts tend to land. If your suite is a single card and a reply card, you are probably not here, and it is worth weighing again.

Stamps that make 3 ounces

  • One Three-Ounce stamp, worth $1.40. Exact.
  • One Two-Ounce stamp plus one Additional Ounce stamp: $1.11 + $0.29. Exact.
  • One Forever stamp plus two Additional Ounce stamps: $0.82 + $0.29 + $0.29. Exact.
  • Two Forever stamps are worth $1.64, which also covers $1.40 with $0.24 to spare.

You are close to the top of the letter range

Letters go up to 3.5 oz. Between 3 and 3.5 oz the price is $1.69. Above 3.5 oz the invitation is priced as a large envelope: $2.56 for anything up to 4 oz.

So a suite at 3.4 oz and a suite at 3.6 oz differ by $0.87 each. If your invitations weigh in the low threes, check several, because one heavy sheet can carry a piece over the line.

Thickness becomes a real question

A 3 oz suite is usually a thick one. Letters may be at most 1/4 in thick. Over that, the piece is a large envelope regardless of weight, at $2.27 for 3 oz. Measure the thickest point of a sealed envelope before you buy stamps.

With the surcharge

A nonmachinable 3 oz letter, such as a square one or one with a wax seal, costs $1.89. For 100 invitations that is $189.00 against $140.00 without it.

Check the weight twice

If you expected 2 oz and the scale says 2.2, do not round down. The 3 oz price applies from the first fraction over 2 oz.
